Guernica art print by Pablo Picasso
The Basque town of Guernica was destroyed on April 26, 1937 by an air raid by German fighter planes - against the applicable international law of war. The city was not fortified, there were no air defenses and no bunkers, it was a targeted attack on the civilian population. Germany had sided with the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War defeated under Franco. About 300 people are believed to have died today. 80% of the city was destroyed. The Attack was condemned worldwide, but only Pablo Picasso made it through his 3.51m by 7.82m monumental painting, The Terror of War Forever to merge with the name of the Spanish city.
